Kino Flo Lighting Systems

FreeStyle T44/T24 LED Tubes

Kino Flo® Lighting Systems’ True Match® FreeStyle LED tubes are specially designed for operation in FreeStyle T44 & T24 fixtures for film production or stage design lighting. The FreeStyle LED tubes display Kino Flo’s True Match white light and RGBWW color management system found in Kino Flo’s LED lighting fixtures. The tubes are 4ft (1.2m) & 2ft (0.6m). On camera, FreeStyle LED tubes photograph with the same softness, the same subtle color reproduction as Kino Flo’s award-winning T12 high-output lamps. In addition to high color rendering, cinematographers will see the difference the 310° LED tube makes when operated in a fixture or out of the fixture as a remote “sabre” of light. Paired with the FreeStyle fixture and light intensifying reflector, the tube projects soft light forward at a 100° beam angle at about the same light levels you’d get from a 1000W tungsten softlight.

The FreeStyle T44/T24 LED System (SYS-FT44U/SYS-FT24U) consists of:
FreeStyle T44/T24 LED Fixture plus 4 x FS-48 LED Tubes or 4 x FS-24 LED Tubes, Mounting Plate, FreeStyle 140X LED DMX Controller, and Extension Cable.

It was designed in this manner to allow the greatest flexibility in lighting solutions for challenging situations.

Modular Design

The FreeStyle T44/T24 Fixture houses the tubes and is comprised of built-in barndoors, a Louver, Reflector and Tube Harness. The Louver and Reflector are held in place with Velcro fasteners.

There is a strain relief on the tube Harness to ensure the connectors don’t pull off the tubes during operation.  To get the harness away from the fixture, turn the 1/4 turn fastener and rotate counter-clockwise to release.

FreeStyle T44/T24 Fixture can be used in different configurations:

1) Complete fixture with all components combined.
2) “Harness Only” – The wiring harness is removed from the fixture so that the user can build a softbox, hide behind Plexiglass or rig into
tight locations. The wiring harness uses Kino Flo designed Tube connectors so tubes can be operated independently of the fixture.
3) Can use Louver to give direction to the light or remove louver to give broad coverage over an area, such as lighting blue and
    green screens etc.

Kino Flo tubes can operate inside the fixture or independently with only the wiring harness.

The FreeStyle Reflector has a unique design to accommodate the aluminum channel on the back of the FreeStyle tube. It provides even light distribution and maximizes light output. In addition, it acts as a heatsink and allows the FreeStyle Tubes to run cooler.

DMX “Out” port will automatically terminate.

The White menu features Dimming, tunable Kelvin range from 2700K tungsten to 6500K daylight and Green/Magenta control channels.
The Green/Magenta control can be scaled from 0 to 100, where 25 = ¼ correction, 50 = ½ correction and 100 = full correction.

In the Gels/Hue menu, the Kelvin range is extended to 2500K Kelvin to 9900K daylight and a fourth channel is called Gel.  The Gel channel includes Kino Flo presets such as blue & green screen, sodium vapor, mercury vapor as well as over 100 well-known lighting gels. The gel function can be applied to any Kelvin temperature and by pushing the control knob in/out, the gel will be applied or removed. A fifth channel called Hue Angle (Hue) and sixth channel Saturation (Sat) are also included in the gel menu. These two channels behave similar to a traditional color wheel, where white light is in the center and Hue Angle determines the color along a 360-degree range and Saturation determines how much color is applied. With the Hue Angle and Saturation it is possible to create over 2 million color combinations!

The RGB color menu gives individual control of red, green and blue LED’s. The RGB mode is a great way to work with apps with predetermined RGB presets or color wheels. RGB menu is also a great feature to dial in specific gel RGB values or when controlling colors from a DMX desk.

The FX (Effects) menu introduced on June 1, 2018 provides access to popular effects such as Candle, Fire, TV, Police, Lightning, Paparazzi, Pulse and Scroll. When on the desired effect, there are several pre-sets as well as control parameters that can be altered. For example, in the Lightning effect there is a “Storm” and “Frankenstein” preset, but it is possible to change Rate to provide additional variation.

True Match® Firmware 4.0 (Camera) update in September 2019 includes groundbreaking features: CIE xy, Camera Profiles LUTs and Color Space selection.

The CIE xy determines the color displayed by its X and Y space coordinates. For example, with a handheld color meter like the Sekonic
C-800, users can obtain a CIE xy reading from any light source and input the CIE xy coordinates into the Kino Flo LED fixture to match colors closely.

Camera Profiles LUTs available for the following cinema cameras and more to follow: Panavsion DXL, Sony Venice, Arri Alexa, Panasonic Varicam. Kino Flo’s True Match® firmware balances their LED lights to the cameras rather than the other way around. The Kino Flo designed tungsten and daylight LED emitters harmonize with the camera sensors even as the color temperature settings are adjusted.

The Color Space defines the RGB color space (white point and RGB primary colors) as a means of matching color points between manufacturing.  Defining the color space takes the guesswork out of post-production workflow and color grading.  Included in the firmware are: rec 709/sRGB, P3 D65, and rec 2020.

True Match® Firmware 5.0 (RDM) update in May 2021 includes RDM protocol, Crossfade, Expanded 16bit Options and Simplified Profiles.

Remote Device Management (RDM) is a protocol enhancement to USITT DMX512 that allows bi-directional communication between a lighting or system controller and attached RDM compliant devices over a standard DMX line. This protocol will allow configuration, status monitoring, and management of these devices in such a way that does not disturb the normal operation of standard DMX512 devices that do not recognize the RDM protocol.

Expanded 16bit Options – Standard 8bit personalities use one DMX slot per parameter. This allows for 256 (0 to 255) values per parameter. 16bit personalities use two DMX slots for parameters needing finer control. Using two DMX slots gives 65536 (0 to 65535) values per parameter.

The Crossfade feature allows users to select two different color points and crossfade between the two.

New Simplified Profiles allow minimum use of channels making it simpler to program

Mounting

Mounted on a Stand

Mounting to ceiling

One of the design features that makes the fixture so popular is the twist-on removable Center Mount. When it’s on, the fixture mounts easily to a light stand; when it’s off, the fixture is flat and can be hand-held, or hidden in a space too small to place a stand-mounting fixture. When the mount is removed, the grommet holes along the edge of the fixture are designed to allow the fixture to be screwed to a wall or ceiling through its eyelets.

The standard mount comes with a KinoGrip Mount w/ 3/8″ Pin (MTP-KG41) that clips into a grip head. The ball and socket mount allows the fixture to be oriented in a broad range of angles.

There is also a Baby Receiver version and Baby Receiver Short (16mm) (see below) available as accessories. The yellow wire loops are there to provide attachment points for a safety chain.

FreeStyle LED Advantages

The FreeStyle T44/T24 LED DMX operates on universal AC power or battery power and needs only 1.25A at 120VAC or 6.25A at 24VDC. The FreeStyle LED’s cost savings from low energy and long LED life continues Kino Flo’s reputation as an environmentally friendly lighting company.

LED’s are well known as being energy efficient, lasting for thousands of hours.  While Kino Flo’s FreeStyle LED also has a long LED life, the FreeStyle LED’s unique design will maintain its color-correct color temperature.

As with all Kino Flo products, the FreeStyle LED has been specially formulated to match the spectral distribution curves of today’s HD film and video equipment.  The FreeStyle LED has high color rendering.  Even while dimming, the fixture is flicker-free and without color shift.

For Kino Flo, heat management is a critical design element of fixture design.  The physical heat or buildup heat within the LED fixture will directly influence the color temperature, lumen performance and life of an LED.

The FreeStyle LED’s unique design operates coolly, consumes very low energy (1.25A, 120VAC) and is properly ventilated to maintain a stable color temperature.

A well maintained temperature extends the lumen maintenance, color temperature and life of an LED.

Cost savings cover a broad range of concerns:

  • Lower energy costs
  • Less heat so lower air conditioning expenses

With the push for reducing fossil fuel consumption, TV studios are looking at cooler more efficient lighting systems to reduce the costs and save energy.  Part of this process involves generating energy values to determine savings.  One of the most important values is Btu/kWh.

Any light generates a percentage of usable light and the rest in heat.  For example, a standard incandescent light bulb converts only 11 percent of its electrical input into visible light, while the rest is dissipated directly as heat.  There are energy costs involved in cooling the studio environment.  The measure of Btu/kWh is a means of calculating the thermal loads related to operating lighting.

Use the following information to calculate Btu/kWh Watts to Btu:

1 kWh = 3413 Btu/Hr
1 Watt = 3.413 Btu/Hr

3.413 Btu per Watt-hour
