Award-Winning FreeStyle 31
Kino Flo's award-winning FreeStyle 31 unleashes your creative side with a quick-release feature to remove the LED panel from the fixture, cutting the weight nearly in half (from 14.5 lbs/6.6kg to 8.5 lbs/4kg) and creating a smaller form factor for better rigging flexibility. The LED panel’s corner bumpers can be used to hang from rope or wire. The panel also takes a Twist-On mount for working on light stands. The Freestyle 31 comes complete with the full color, programmable FreeStyle controller, Head Cable (25ft), Complete Fixture with removable LED panel, and a twist-on KinoGrip Center Mount. Honeycomb 90° or 60° louvers, mounted with Velcro, give direction to the light, and when removed the panel displays a broad soft beam across the set.
The FreeStyle 31 is known for its high color rendering white light, full hue and saturation color, cinema gel choices, and RGB chromatic selection via the AC/DC FreeStyle 150Watt controller. It has built-in Lumen Radio wireless DMX; no extra cost for wireless receiver accessories. The light can also be operated directly up to 50 feet away from the controller via Kino Flo head cables.
The Freestyle’s driver technology achieves bright, soft light with continuous dimming from 100% to 0% on a linear or square curve without flicker at higher camera speeds or at varied shutter angles. There is no light level change when shifting from 2500K to 9900K, and the color doesn’t change when the light levels rise or fall.
Color and luminosity remain stable over the rated life of the LED’s using Kino Flo’s advanced True Match® daylight and tungsten color management system, which has been an unqualified success since Kino Flo introduced the idea of soft panel True Match Celeb Studio LED’s ten years ago. Passive cooling keeps the LED’s in good shape for a longer usable life than fixtures that require electric fans.
The FreeStyle 31 and 31GT LED Systems consist of four components: FreeStyle 31 or 31GT LED Fixture, Mounting Plate, Extension Cable and FreeStyle 152 LED DMX Controller. It was designed in this manner to allow the greatest flexibility in lighting solutions for challenging situations.

Modular Design

The FreeStyle LED fixture’s modular design includes built-in barndoors, a removable LED panel and removable louver. The louver is held in place with Velcro fasteners. The LED panel can be removed from the fixture housing by pressing the locking pin and turning the thumbscrew. The fixture and removable LED panel have twist-on mating plates to accept a twist-on mount. The four molded corners offer additional rigging points for rope hanging, for example. With the KinoGrip mount, the fixture or LED panel can be hand-held. When the mount is removed, the fixture is flat and can be screwed to the wall or ceiling through its eyelets. For further versatility, the FreeStyle 152 LED DMX Controller can also be strapped to the back of the fixture with Velcro or used remotely with an extension cable.

Gaffer Tray

The stand-alone Gaffer Tray (FIX-F31T) is an accessory, sold separately. The Gaffer Tray holds the removable LED panel. The KinoGrip center mount and the LED controller can be attached. The tray allows for a smaller profile fixture without having the need to bend the plastic barndoors back. When the mount and controller are removed, the tray can be screwed into the wall or ceiling through its screw points.

The FreeStyle 152 LED DMX Controller
The firmware is loaded onto the FreeStyle LED controller and can operate the Freestyle 31 fixture remotely with a 25ft extension cable or can drive the panel directly when mounted to the back of the fixture. The Freestyle controller (LED-152X), includes standard DMX in/out ports for cable as well as wireless DMX connectivity (Lumen Radio®). The controller features universal AC voltage input 100-240vac (1.25 Amps at 120vac) as well as a 3-Pin XLR for 24vdc operation (6.25A).

The White menu features Dimming, tunable Kelvin range from 2700K tungsten to 6500K daylight and Green/Magenta control channels.
The Green/Magenta control can be scaled from 0 to 100, where 25 = ¼ correction, 50 = ½ correction and 100 = full correction.
In the Gels/Hue menu, the Kelvin range is extended to 2500K Kelvin to 9900K daylight and a fourth channel is called Gel. The Gel channel includes Kino Flo presets such as blue & green screen, sodium vapor, mercury vapor as well as over 100 well-known lighting gels. The gel function can be applied to any Kelvin temperature and by pushing the control knob in/out, the gel will be applied or removed. A fifth channel called Hue Angle (Hue) and sixth channel Saturation (Sat) are also included in the gel menu. These two channels behave similar to a traditional color wheel, where white light is in the center and Hue Angle determines the color along a 360-degree range and Saturation determines how much color is applied. With the Hue Angle and Saturation it is possible to create over 2 million color combinations!
The RGB color menu gives individual control of red, green and blue LED’s. The RGB mode is a great way to work with apps with predetermined RGB presets or color wheels. RGB menu is also a great feature to dial in specific gel RGB values or when controlling colors from a DMX desk.
The FX (Effects) menu introduced on June 1, 2018 provides access to popular effects such as Candle, Fire, TV, Police, Lightning, Paparazzi, Pulse and Scroll. When on the desired effect, there are several pre-sets as well as control parameters that can be altered. For example, in the Lightning effect there is a “Storm” and “Frankenstein” preset, but it is possible to change Rate to provide additional variation.
True Match® Firmware 4.0 (Camera) update in September 2019 includes groundbreaking features: CIE xy, Camera Profiles LUTs and Color Space selection.
The CIE xy determines the color displayed by its X and Y space coordinates. For example, with a handheld color meter like the Sekonic
C-800, users can obtain a CIE xy reading from any light source and input the CIE xy coordinates into the Kino Flo LED fixture to match colors closely.
Camera Profiles LUTs available for the following cinema cameras and more to follow: Panavsion DXL, Sony Venice, Arri Alexa, Panasonic Varicam. Kino Flo’s True Match® firmware balances their LED lights to the cameras rather than the other way around. The Kino Flo designed tungsten and daylight LED emitters harmonize with the camera sensors even as the color temperature settings are adjusted.
The Color Space defines the RGB color space (white point and RGB primary colors) as a means of matching color points between manufacturing. Defining the color space takes the guesswork out of post-production workflow and color grading. Included in the firmware are: rec 709/sRGB, P3 D65, and rec 2020.
True Match® Firmware 5.0 (RDM) update in May 2021 includes RDM protocol, Crossfade, Expanded 16bit Options and Simplified Profiles.
Remote Device Management (RDM) is a protocol enhancement to USITT DMX512 that allows bi-directional communication between a lighting or system controller and attached RDM compliant devices over a standard DMX line. This protocol will allow configuration, status monitoring, and management of these devices in such a way that does not disturb the normal operation of standard DMX512 devices that do not recognize the RDM protocol.
Expanded 16bit Options – Standard 8bit personalities use one DMX slot per parameter. This allows for 256 (0 to 255) values per parameter. 16bit personalities use two DMX slots for parameters needing finer control. Using two DMX slots gives 65536 (0 to 65535) values per parameter.
The Crossfade feature allows users to select two different color points and crossfade between the two.
New Simplified Profiles allow minimum use of channels making it simpler to program
Mounting

Mounted on a Stand

LED Panel Mounted on a Stand
One of the design features of the FreeStyle LED Fixture is the twist-on removable Center Mount. When it’s on, the fixture mounts easily to a light stand; when it’s off, the fixture is flat and can be hand-held, or hidden in a space too small to place a stand-mounting fixture. When the mount is removed, the grommet holes along the edge of the fixture are designed to allow the fixture to be screwed onto a wall or ceiling through its eyelets. The remote Controller can also be attached to the back of the fixture with Velcro or operate remotely with an extension cable.
The FreeStyle removable LED panel also has its own mating plate to accept the twist-on mount plate. The LED panel can be hand-held with the KinoGrip mount and also has molded corners as rigging points for rope hanging, for example.

FreeStyle LED Advantages
The FreeStyle 31 LED DMX operates on universal AC power or battery power and needs only 1.25A at 120VAC or 6.25A at 24VDC. The FreeStyle LED’s cost savings from low energy and long LED life continues Kino Flo’s reputation as an environmentally friendly lighting company.
LED’s are well known as being energy efficient, lasting for thousands of hours. While Kino Flo’s FreeStyle LED also has a long LED life, the FreeStyle LED’s unique design will maintain its color-correct color temperature.
As with all Kino Flo products, the FreeStyle LED has been specially formulated to match the spectral distribution curves of today’s HD film and video equipment. The FreeStyle LED has high color rendering. Even while dimming, the fixture is flicker-free and without color shift.
For Kino Flo, heat management is a critical design element of fixture design. The physical heat or buildup heat within the LED fixture will directly influence the color temperature, lumen performance and life of an LED.
The FreeStyle LED’s unique design operates coolly, consumes very low energy (1.25A, 120VAC) and is properly ventilated to maintain a stable color temperature.
A well maintained temperature extends the lumen maintenance, color temperature and life of an LED.
Cost savings cover a broad range of concerns:
- Lower energy costs
- Less heat so lower air conditioning expenses
With the push for reducing fossil fuel consumption, TV studios are looking at cooler more efficient lighting systems to reduce the costs and save energy. Part of this process involves generating energy values to determine savings. One of the most important values is Btu/kWh.
Any light generates a percentage of usable light and the rest in heat. For example, a standard incandescent light bulb converts only 11 percent of its electrical input into visible light, while the rest is dissipated directly as heat. There are energy costs involved in cooling the studio environment. The measure of Btu/kWh is a means of calculating the thermal loads related to operating lighting.
Use the following information to calculate Btu/kWh Watts to Btu:
1 kWh = 3413 Btu/Hr
1 Watt = 3.413 Btu/Hr
3.413 Btu per Watt-hour
