Kino Flo Lighting Systems

Diva-Lite 21 All in One

Kino Flo’s newly redesigned Diva-Lite 21 is another addition to the Diva-lite family and continues to be our most popular Interview and small studio fixture. Introduced in April at NAB 2018, its new form factor fits into a smaller travel case to save space for location work.

It also provides a smaller profile for studios that have low ceilings. The Diva-Lite 21 comes as center mount with a carry handle or yoke mount option. Both versions feature four corner bumpers that can be used to hang from rope or wire. A honeycomb Louver (90° or 60°) is held in place with Velcro and gives direction to the light or can be easily removed to give broad coverage over the set. For those that like the plastic fixture shell, Diva-Lite 20 is also available.

The Diva-Lite 21’s “All in One” design includes standard DMX in/out ports for cable as well as wireless DMX connectivity (Lumen Radio®). Additional specifications include universal AC voltage input 100-240vac (1.25 Amps at 120vac) as well as a 3-Pin XLR for 24vdc operation (6.25A).

DMX “Out” port will automatically terminate.

The White menu features Dimming, tunable Kelvin range from 2700K tungsten to 6500K daylight and Green/Magenta control channels. The Green/Magenta control can be scaled from 0 to 100, where 25 = ¼ correction, 50 = ½ correction and 100 = full correction.

In the Gels/Hue menu, the Kelvin range is extended to 2500K Kelvin to 9900K daylight and a fourth channel is called Gel.  The Gel channel includes Kino Flo presets such as blue & green screen, sodium vapor, mercury vapor as well as over 100 well-known lighting gels. The gel function can be applied to any Kelvin temperature and by pushing the control knob in/out, the gel will be applied or removed. A fifth channel called Hue Angle (Hue) and sixth channel Saturation (Sat) are also included in the gel menu. These two channels behave similar to a traditional color wheel, where white light is in the center and Hue Angle determines the color along a 360-degree range and Saturation determines how much color is applied. With the Hue Angle and Saturation it is possible to create over 2 million color combinations!

The RGB color menu gives individual control of red, green and blue LED’s. The RGB mode is a great way to work with apps with predetermined RGB presets or color wheels. RGB menu is also a great feature to dial in specific gel RGB values or when controlling colors from a DMX desk.

The FX (Effects) menu introduced on June 1, 2018 provides access to popular effects such as Candle, Fire, TV, Police, Lightning, Paparazzi, Pulse and Scroll. When on the desired effect, there are several pre-sets as well as control parameters that can be altered. For example, in the Lightning effect there is a “Storm” and “Frankenstein” preset, but it is possible to change Rate to provide additional variation.

True Match® Firmware 4.0 (Camera) update in September 2019 includes groundbreaking features: CIE xy, Camera Profiles LUTs and Color Space selection.

The CIE xy determines the color displayed by its X and Y space coordinates. For example, with a handheld color meter like the Sekonic
C-800, users can obtain a CIE xy reading from any light source and input the CIE xy coordinates into the Kino Flo LED fixture to match colors closely.

Camera Profiles LUTs available for the following cinema cameras and more to follow: Panavsion DXL, Sony Venice, Arri Alexa, Panasonic Varicam. Kino Flo’s True Match® firmware balances their LED lights to the cameras rather than the other way around. The Kino Flo designed tungsten and daylight LED emitters harmonize with the camera sensors even as the color temperature settings are adjusted.

The Color Space defines the RGB color space (white point and RGB primary colors) as a means of matching color points between manufacturing.  Defining the color space takes the guesswork out of post-production workflow and color grading.  Included in the firmware are: rec 709/sRGB, P3 D65, and rec 2020.

True Match® Firmware 5.0 (RDM) update in May 2021 includes RDM protocol, Crossfade, Expanded 16bit Options and Simplified Profiles.

Remote Device Management (RDM) is a protocol enhancement to USITT DMX512 that allows bi-directional communication between a lighting or system controller and attached RDM compliant devices over a standard DMX line. This protocol will allow configuration, status monitoring, and management of these devices in such a way that does not disturb the normal operation of standard DMX512 devices that do not recognize the RDM protocol.

Expanded 16bit Options – Standard 8bit personalities use one DMX slot per parameter. This allows for 256 (0 to 255) values per parameter. 16bit personalities use two DMX slots for parameters needing finer control. Using two DMX slots gives 65536 (0 to 65535) values per parameter.

The Crossfade feature allows users to select two different color points and crossfade between the two.

New Simplified Profiles allow minimum use of channels making it simpler to program

Light Control

Honeycomb Louvers (LVR-SL290-P & LVR-SL260-P) – The spread of the light is controlled by means of thin wall honeycomb louvers.  The advantage of these louvers is the minimal loss of light.  The Diva-Lite LED fixtures include a 90° louver.  A 60° louver is also available as an accessory.  They are lightweight and are held to the fixture with Velcro fasteners.

The SnapBag accessory (DFS-FS21-S) is a lightweight fabric tailor-made for the Diva-Lite LED. It slips over the fixture and is attached with straps.  The reflective material intensifies the soft light.  The removable grid cloth attaches to the inside with Velcro.

The SnapGrid accessory (LVR-FS240-S) is constructed of pre-stretched fireproof fabric with a built-in stainless steel frame.  It unfolds and snaps into place.  It can only be used with the corresponding SnapBag and is attached with Velcro.  It is not designed to be used by itself.

Cases

The clamshell case (KAS-DL21-C) is recommended for transport in small vehicles or local production trucks. It holds one Diva-Lite 21 LED and a spare louver.

Diva-Lite Advantages

The Diva-Lite 21 LED DMX operates on universal AC power or battery power and needs only 1.25A at 120VAC or 6.25A at 24VDC .
The Diva-Lite LED’s cost savings from low energy and long LED life continues Kino Flo’s reputation as an environmentally friendly lighting company.

LED’s are well known as being energy efficient, lasting for thousands of hours.  While Kino Flo’s Diva-Lite LED also has a long LED life,
the Diva-Lite LED’s unique design will maintain its color-correct color temperature.

As with all Kino Flo products, the Diva-Lite LED has been specially formulated to match the spectral distribution curves of today’s HD film and video equipment.  The Diva-Lite LED has high color rendering.  Even while dimming, the fixture is flicker-free and without color shift.

For Kino Flo, heat management is a critical design element of fixture design.  The physical heat or buildup heat within the LED fixture will directly influence the color temperature, lumen performance and life of an LED.

The Diva-Lite LED’s unique design operates coolly, consumes very low energy (1.25A, 120VAC) and is properly ventilated to maintain a stable color temperature.

A well maintained temperature extends the lumen maintenance, color temperature and life of an LED.

Cost savings cover a broad range of concerns:

  • Lower energy costs
  • Less heat so lower air conditioning expenses

With the push for reducing fossil fuel consumption, TV studios are looking at cooler more efficient lighting systems to reduce the costs and save energy.  Part of this process involves generating energy values to determine savings.  One of the most important values is Btu/kWh.

Any light generates a percentage of usable light and the rest in heat.  For example, a standard incandescent light bulb converts only 11 percent of its electrical input into visible light, while the rest is dissipated directly as heat.  There are energy costs involved in cooling the studio environment.  The measure of Btu/kWh is a means of calculating the thermal loads related to operating lighting.

Use the following information to calculate Btu/kWh Watts to Btu:

1 kWh = 3413 Btu/Hr
1 Watt = 3.413 Btu/Hr

3.413 Btu per Watt-hour
